These women are wearing black due to the death of a spouse or a child... in some instances they wear black for their eternity... knowing that I became more curious about the picture.......
The black may be worn also for sisters or brothers or other close relatives. Old people on the Balkans follow the traditions more closely then the young ones. My mother and I and my syster did not wear black for long time when my father died. It is no use and is very depressing. Long time ago there used to be a big social pressure to obbey the rituals - no longer - these women do it voluntary. As we get old we see death and we loose close to us people, but old people also get wise enough to accept it and are able to be happy and even happier then the youngsters who waste their time in meaningless worriing without realizing that the today is just a beautiful day and it is so much fun to be around and see what is going on!
Thanks Ellie. This is a tradition that I admire alot, and I agree with you 100%.
